Smiley Culture was the nom de reggae of London DJ/singer David Emmanuel, who scored a Top 20 U.K. hit, “Police Officer,” the year this exuberant photo was taken. He earned his moniker because of his reputation of asking the girls he met to smile. His dad was Jamaican and his mum hailed from South America; this eclectic background, combined with the cheek-by-jowl multiculturalism of his South London stomping grounds, helped forge his appealing musical fusion. His first single, “Cockney Translation,” shows his ability to travel between the dialects and lexicons of his home turf; some give Smiley credit for helping to forge a new bohemian argot.

Before stepping up as an artist, Smiley was a DJ with Saxon Sound system; in that capacity he collaborated with reggae luminaries like Maxi Priest and became the first reggae DJ on the revered radio series Top of the Pops. Though his moment in the pop spotlight was brief, he hosted a TV show, Club Mix, and had a cameo role in the U.K. film Absolute Beginners, performing a vocal rendition of Miles Davis’ “So What.”
