Quick: Who’s the only member of Pink Floyd who’s been in the band continuously since its 1964 formation? If you said drummer Nick Mason, have a cigar. The Birmingham-born, London-bred skinsman played with fellow Floyd members Roger Waters and Richard Wright in the band Sigma 6 before the epochal rock institution was founded; he has since provided the pulse for an array of Floyd incarnations, variations and solo projects. 1974, when this photo was taken, was also the year the band’s landmark album Dark Side of the Moon was released.
The T-shirt design sported here by Mason (and reproduced with typical loving care by Worn Free) will be familiar to fans of Japanese art – it’s the iconic Great Wave Off Kanagawa, from the 19th century woodcut by Hokusai, though the classic image is reversed on the shirt. The image is perhaps the most famous example of the ukiyo-e style, which translates as “pictures of the floating world.”
